Design 21: Social Design Network launches a new online design competition.
The push to make bicycling a regular form of transportation for people across the world is now gaining momentum in light of global problems such as pollution, rising gas prices and public health concerns. To create support for this movement, DESIGN 21: Social Design Network is challenging designers across the globe to create accessories for bicycles that would encourage people to make bicycling a part of their everyday lives.
The deadline for this online competition, Power to the Pedal, is April 30, 2008.
Background
Not only is bicycling more environmentally-friendly than driving high exhaust emission and diesel powered vehicles, but it positively impacts the health, well-being and fitness level of those who choose it as a regular mode of transportation. Though advocacy groups and local governments are continuing to make strides in support of this lifestyle, there is still much to be done. In order to create definite change, communities and government initiatives must work to improve infrastructures, provide safer routes for bicyclists and facilitate public education and awareness programs.
Power to the Pedal is designed to procure answers to design problems that prohibit bicycle use. Through accessories or add-ons, designers should make bicycling more convenient, more enjoyable, safer and easily integrated into daily lifestyles. Designs will be judged based on overall effectiveness, creativity, practicality, aesthetics and how well it responds to environmental concerns. The winner will be announced on May 20, 2008 at www.design21sdn.com.
