The second installment in the Japan Foundation's Facetnate! series, an exhibition by by William “Bil” Anderson Jr, is a fusion of Japan’s Superflat art movement and western skate culture.
Anderson, an industrial designer and visual artist, combines his engineering background, skateboarding interests and talents as an illustrator to produce his own Superflat art - inspired by Takashi Murakami’s Superflat epidemic, an art form heavily influenced by Japanese manga and anime.
Totally Flat Consumer Camo features a series of works on canvas with prominent manga-like characters executing skateboarding moves or tricks, alongside hand-sculpted 'gatchapons' - a lucky toy contained within small plastic capsules, usually from vending machines.
All five Facetnate! finalists will be exhibiting through til August in the running for the Japan Foundation’s New Artist Award. The award includes a return airfare to the 2008 Yokohama Triennale.
