The top ten finalists in the Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Award for 2009 have been decided.
They are: Adam Cornish, Daniel.Emma (Daniel To & Emma Aiston), David Knott, Gary Galego, Helen Kontouris, Joseph Ormrod, Kain Lucas, Marcel Sigel, Rohan Nicol and Tomek Archer. The shortlist was chosen by an esteemed panel of judges including Liane Rossler of Dinosaur Designs, David Clark, Editor of Vogue Living, Professor of Design at UTS, Kees Dorst, Heidi Dokulil from Parcel, Ewan McEoin from Propeller, Terri Winter from Top3 by Design, Fashion Retailer Belinda Seper and former Deputy Director of the Powerhouse Museum, Jennifer Sanders.
Past winners Jon Goulder, Adam goodrum, Lucas Chirnside, Charles Wilson, Bernabei Freeman, Trent Jansen and Ilias Fotopoulos have all gone on to establish successful practices and raise the profile of Australian design abroad.
In addition to a $30,000 grant, the overall winner of the award receives a trip to Milan to attend the prestigious Salone del Mobile furniture fair. Four runners up each receive $2,500 and the remaining five finalists receive $1,000, making the Design Discovery Award Australia’s richest design prize.
The award will be presented by the Dutch designer Maarten Baas, who is also giving a public talk at the Powerhouse Museum on 17 November (click on the link below for more details).
The finalists present their entry to the panel of judges before their works go on to be part of the Design Discovery Award Exhibition. This year’s Design Discovery Award exhibition is on in Sydney from 9-30 November at Establishment and will then travel to Melbourne and Brisbane venues in early 2010.
