A group of talented artists and designers are busy exploring the merging worlds of textiles and technology in the reSkin Wearable Technology Lab.
reSkin is an intensive three-week workshop focusing on wearable technology through the skill-based practices of object, jewellery, fashion design and media art. A collaborative project of the Australian Network for Art and Technology (ANAT), the Australian National University School of Art, the Centre for New Media Arts (CNMA) and Craft Australia, the workshop centres around research and development, experimentation, collaboration and project development.
Seven international and national facilitators and twenty participants including jewellers, textile artists, fashion designers and media artists are currently researching, developing and rapid-prototyping sensor, time-based and reactive clothing, jewellery, shoes, bags and personal, environmental and device designs – anything wearable and technologically integrated.
Lecturers at the Lab include Stephen Barras, the designer of ZiZi, the affectionate couch, prominent Australian sound artist Alistair Riddell, Montreal-based designer Joanna Berzowska and LA-based multimedia designer and programmer Elise Co.
Through a series of lectures, workshops and discussion sessions, participants are examining and reflecting on futuristic concepts of 'smart' artefacts that can 'think' and 'communicate' with each other, and the ways in which this technology will impact on everyday life in the physical world. Also being explored is the idea of embedding electronics and new materials into the design of everyday objects.
reSkin will conclude with an exciting opportunity for the public to become involved. Held at the Australian National University and the National Museum of Australia from 2-3 February 2007, the WearNow Symposium will feature national and international speakers addressing the current state and future directions of wearable technology. The Symposium will be streamed on the net for international and national audiences. A special issue of ANAT Filter magazine examining these emerging practices in depth will be produced to coincide with the Symposium. Registration varies from $30 for the Symposium only (concession) to $110 for all events. Register via the reSkin website.
Throughout the Lab, the facilitators and participants will be posting their thoughts and comments on their activities on the reSkin blog.
