An interactive installation that allows you to influence the evolutionary path of the beautiful and mysterious 'foraminifera', and explore the growth, transition and ultimate extinction of an entire species.
Minutić {tree} is a collaboration between interdisciplinary artist Catherine Watling and Micropalaeontologists Professor Paul Pearson and Dr Helen Coxall from the School of Earth, Ocean and Planetary Sciences at Cardiff University. Their muse is the beautiful collection of single-celled microfossils known as foraminifera, whose intricate structures reveal hidden secrets of evolution and allude to the origins of complex life on earth.
Minutić {tree} is the last in a series of process-based artworks from the Minutiae project. Previous works include Minutić {01}, a series of stereogrammes and a site-specific projection at fo.am, Brussels in 2003, and Minutić{03}, an experimental installation at the 2005 Signals Short Film Festival, Colchester (UK). Minutić was also recently presented at the 2006 International Symposium for Electronic Arts in San Jose, California. Co-authored (Pearson/Watling/Coxall) elements of the Minutiae project are being submitted for publication in scientific journals and Minutiae {tree} will be available as a fully interactive online artwork and scientific resource on www.catherinewatling.com by July 2007. The final Minutić installation will premiere at the Babylon Gallery, Ely (UK) as part of the Enter Festival, Cambridge (UK) in April 2007.
Minutić {tree} is supported by Arts Council England, Cywaith Cymru. Artworks Wales, Cardiff University, The Royal Society of Great Britain and Signals Media Arts and is assisted by the Junction (Cambridge) and the University of Technology (Sydney). Bespoke software development by Chris Rogers and audio by Matt Clarke.
Beta_space: Art – technology - experiment - discovery
Beta_space is Sydney’s only dedicated venue for interactive art, a unique venue where artists can show the public ‘first drafts’ of interactive artworks.
Beta_space is an experimental environment where the public can engage with the latest research in art and new technology. A ‘beta version’ is a new piece of software or hardware that needs testing and feedback from its users to help its creators make it better. Beta_space is a public laboratory for beta testing interactive artworks.
It is a collaboration between the Powerhouse Museum and Creativity and Cognition Studios (CCS) at the University of Technology, Sydney, a cutting edge research group which is home to many artists creating exciting interactive artwork.
