‘The language of making needs no interpreter’
Jon Goulder has a reputation for making elegant and innovative furniture, often developed around the use of plywood forms. He established his own studio in Gerringong, NSW, in 2000 and is currently working for the Designing Futures project in WA.
Goulder believes in the value of having a strong skills base, making his own prototypes and much of his production range. A new direction is the upholstered fibreglass Calypso lounge, 2007.
He aims to develop a viable business where much of his work can be produced and distributed by others. His Leda seat, for example, is now made by Woodmark International in Sydney. Goulder is also exploring opportunities for manufacturing some items in other countries, and has most recently been working with a factory in China.
You can see Goulder's work in the new exhibition Smart works: design and the handmade, from 30 March 2007 at the Powerhouse Museum.
