‘Bringing it back in-house…’
London-based New Zealander, Jeremy Cole began hand-forming moulds and slip casting, firing and assembling porcelain lights in his living room in Kew, London, in 2004.
After evolving quickly to studio manufacture, then spending some years contracting out aspects of production, he has now brought all the manufacture back to his studio. He employs a studio manager, taking on students for short-term work experience, and regularly visits Stoke-on-Trent potteries. Here he meets mould-makers, and discusses glazes and other technical aspects of manufacture.
Cole’s first works from his ‘Aloe’ range were shown at the Tendence exhibition in Frankfurt in 2004.
You can see Cole's work in the new exhibition Smart works: design and the handmade, from 30 March 2007 at the Powerhouse Museum.
