Professor Kerstin Wickman talk at 'Smart works: design and the handmade' symposium
Professor Kerstin Wickman presents her talk, 'Scandinavian design is not what it used to be: new directions', at the 'Smart works' symposium at the Powerhouse Museum on 31 March 2007.
Professor Kerstin Wickman believes that small is beautiful. From her considerable experience in teaching and writing about design and the crafts, she considers the links – and myths – between materials, skills and cultural identity and design and industry in the Nordic countries.

She also discusses the future of crafts-based industries in Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark, and how designers, makers and industries are responding to issues of global manufacturing.

Kerstin Wickman was most recently professor in design history at the Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, Sweden. She was co-curator, with Widar Halén, for the exhibition and book 'Scandinavian design beyond the myth: 50 years of design from the Nordic countries', Stockholm, 2003. From 1973–99 she was design editor at 'Form', the magazine of Swedish Society of Crafts and Design (Svensk Form).
