A red dress hangs in my wardrobe, I have not worn it for years, but I cannot bring myself to throw it out. Normally, I follow the ‘one year’ rule and ditch things after I have not worn them for a year, but this ‘ along with my wedding dress and a couple of other items ‘ survives the cull year after year. Too many happy memories are captured in its folds. Occasionally I take it out, and try it on again. It transports me back to another time, another place. My body remembers this garment. Among the reasons we are so universally attracted to glass as a material are its transparency, its playful ability to capture, reflect or refract light, its capacity to render colours particularly clear and vibrant, and the mystery that still enshrouds the complex and varied art-glass making processes. The ancient glassmakers’ skills, some almost lost but revived time and again, are an inherent part of the magic of glass. The Powerhouse Museum recently acquired an aluminium and stainless steel teapot designed as a prototype by Robert Foster for Alessi in 1995. Foster is a silversmith and designer (b. 1962 in Kyneton, Victoria) who works in hollow-ware, sculptural lighting and furniture. In 1993, he established F!NK and Co (four years later his wife, Gretel Harrison, became partner in the company) initially to produce the company’s best known design, the F!NK water jug, but also to produce one-off handmade works. The Powerhouse Museum has several volumes containing thousands of bright, unfaded samples of fashionable fabric designs, braids and laces ranging from the 1830s to the 1990s.
