Liz Williamson: New Textiles

A red dress hangs in my wardrobe, I have not worn it for years, but I cannot bring myself to throw it out. Normally, I follow the ‘one year’ rule and ditch things after I have not worn them for a year, but this ‘ along with my wedding dress and a couple of other items ‘ survives the cull year after year. Too many happy memories are captured in its folds. Occasionally I take it out, and try it on again. It transports me back to another time, another place. My body remembers this garment. ‘Object of the Week’ blog

Beavering away behind-the-scenes of any museum are collections focused staff (curators, registrars and conservators) working on lively projects, exhibitions, object acquisitions and research papers. Much of this work is only ever experienced by audiences as an end product, as a display in the museum; a publication or event. In light of this and the fact that museums’ only ever have 3-5% of their collection on public display at any one time, the Powerhouse Museum has turned to collections blogging as a way of improving access, dialogue and transparency in museum practice. Starting A New Sentence About Australian Design

This article discusses the reference to ‘the old dichotomy between hand and mind that dogs the art/craft debate’ … but, as always with Cohn, there’s more to get here than what you see. Has the handmade object worn out its aura, redolent with the dignity of human labour and a clutch of positive aesthetic values, and now reduced to nothing more than a wank’ And, if so, what of the role of the designer, traditionally removed from the site of labour’ In a world where design and style too often translate into Third World sweatshops and cut-price rip-offs, ‘getting your hands dirty’ garners a whole new meaning.
