ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP

The 2010 Design NSW: Travelling Scholarship – a grant of $18,000 (Australian dollars) – assists a NSW designer at the beginning of their career to undertake a program of professional development overseas. The recipient of the award is announced during Sydney Design Festival at the Powerhouse Museum and featured in the festival program and on D'Hub [www.dhub.org].


The NSW Government through Arts NSW assists the recipient to develop a program of professional development in the UK and other countries if desired. This program may include but is not limited to:


  • study or training, including short-term courses or workshops
  • professional research
  • residencies, and / or
  • mentorships or internships with approved designers, manufacturers, companies and/or organisations


The British Council will assist the recipient with their program of professional development in the UK by providing support and advice, and facilitating introductions to up to eight leading practitioners relevant to the winner's field.


The Design NSW: Travelling Scholarship is presented by the Powerhouse Museum and Arts NSW in partnership with the British Council.


WHO CAN ENTER

The Scholarship is intended for emerging designers, not for established practitioners. To be eligible to apply for the Scholarship, applicants must be within the first five years of professional practice as a designer. Professional practice, for the purpose of this Scholarship, is generally understood to commence with either a) the completion of a design-related undergraduate degree or relevant course of study or b) the start of professional industry experience.


The Scholarship is open to designers working in the broad areas of product and communication design (including for the home, industry and the body). The Scholarship is not intended for designers working in the built environment (including architecture and landscape architecture).


All applicants must be:

  • either Australian citizens or persons holding permanent residence visas; and
  • a resident of New South Wales (Persons currently overseas may apply provided that they can demonstrate that NSW is their primary place of residence and that they are otherwise eligible.)


THE SCHOLARSHIP

The Design NSW: Travelling Scholarship winner will receive:

  • $18,000 (Australian dollars) from Arts NSW as financial support for a program of professional development overseas.
  • Support and advice from British Council staff, including the facilitation of up to 8 introductions to leading practitioners relevant to the winner's field.
  • Announcement during Sydney Design 2010, inclusion in the festival program and coverage on D'Hub.


JUDGING


Marcus Piper is joint founder / creative director of one8one7, an award-winning collaborative studio working internationally from the south coast of New South Wales. Prior to launching one8one7 with partner Christey Johansson, Marcus worked with Neville Brody's Research Studios in London.


Melinda Young is a Sydney-based artist, academic and curator in the field of contemporary jewellery and craft practice. Melinda has an extensive exhibition profile, having participated in over 85 exhibitions in Australia and overseas. She has worked at contemporary craft and design galleries including Object, Australian Centre for Craft and Design and Metalab, undertaken a range of freelance writing, advisory and curatorial projects, and taught jewellery at the College of Fine Arts, Sydney College of the Arts, at Community Colleges and the Design Centre, Enmore, Sydney Institute, TAFE NSW.


Dr Sam Spurr is currently Director of Interior Design at the University of Technology Sydney. Sam has practiced in the firm 4Site Architecture since 2000 and has taught full time in the school of architecture UTS since 2007. After completing her doctorate titled ‘Performative Architecture’ at UNSW, Sam was co-convener for the international SEAM Symposium 2009 on dance, film and architecture. Sam practices as a designer, theorist, and journalist, whose current research focuses on importing performative strategies from dance and theatre into spatial design.


Stephanie Pemberton is Program Director, Australian International Design Awards, Standards Australia. Prior to joining Standards Australia, Stephanie was Regional Packaging Designer at Johnson & Johnson Consumer Products Asia Pacific, followed by Senior Industrial Designer at Nielsen Design Associates. During her six years as a practising designer, Stephanie played a key role in the development of a number of award-winning products including the iconic Telstra Touchfone and the Betachek G5, winner of the 2003 Australian Design Award of the Year.


Stage 1

A judging committee comprised of industry leaders will assess each applicant’s submitted designs against the following criteria:

  • Authenticity and innovation
  • Practicality and performance
  • Ecological impact and social responsibility


This stage of the assessment process will be used to develop a shortlist of applicants to be interviewed by the judging committee.


Stage 2

Shortlisted applicants will be contacted by phone in early July and will be required to be available for an interview at the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, with the judging committee on Monday 19 July 2010.


After the interviews, the judging committee will make its final decision on the basis of ability, potential and suitability of the proposed program of professional development.


The judges' decision is final; no correspondence will be entered into regarding the judges' decision.


HOW TO ENTER

To enter you will need to register using the form below to create a personal login. You will receive an email containing your password and a link to the page where you can log in, submit your profile and upload your entry.


Your profile consists of a summary of your qualifications and professional record, as well as an outline of the proposed program of professional development to be undertaken if the application is successful. This outline is limited to 400 words. Judges will be reviewing multiple entries so keep your description as concise as possible.


Your entry must include documentation of three design works. Each design work may have up to eight images, one video and one sound file. Images should be PDF or JPG format, with no dimension larger than 1600 pixels. Image files must be no greater than 2MB each. Videos must have maximum dimensions 480 x 320 pixels and a file size no greater than 10 MB. Sound files must be mp3 format with a file size no greater than 10 MB. All uploaded files should be named to include the artist's surname and title of the work. Please ensure that you provide all requested details on your submitted works.


All applications are to be written in English.
