ABOUT
The 2009 Design NSW: Travelling Scholarship - a grant of $18,000 - assists a NSW designer at the beginning of their career to undertake a program of professional development overseas. The recipient of the award is announced during the Sydney Design festival at the Powerhouse Museum and featured in the festival program and on D'Hub. [www.dhub.org].
Arts NSW assists the recipient to develop a program of professional development in the UK and other countries if desired. This program may include but is not limited to:
- study or training, including short-term courses or workshops;
- professional research;
- residencies; and / or
- mentorships or internships with approved designers, manufacturers, companies and/or organisations.
The British Council will assist the recipient with their program of professional development in the UK by facilitating introductions to up to eight leading practitioners relevant to the winner's field and providing support and advice from British Council staff.
The Design NSW: Travelling Scholarship is presented by the Powerhouse Museum and Arts NSW in partnership with the British Council.
WHO CAN ENTER
Applicants should be within the first five years of their professional practice as a designer. (Professional practice, for the purpose of this Scholarship is generally understood to be the completion of a design-related undergraduate degree.)
The Scholarship is open to designers working in the broad areas of product and communication design (including for the home, industry and the body). The Scholarship is not intended for established designers or designers working in the built environment (including architecture and landscape architecture).
THE SCHOLARSHIP
The Design NSW: Travelling Scholarship winner will receive:
- $18,000 as financial support for a program of professional development overseas.
- Support and advice from British Council staff, including the facilitation of up to eight introductions to leading practitioners relevant to the winner's field.
- Announcement during Sydney Design 09, inclusion in the festival program and coverage on D'Hub
JUDGING
A judging committee comprised of industry leaders will make its decision on the basis of ability, potential and suitability of the proposed program of professional development. Designs will be assessed on the following criteria:
- Authenticity and innovation
- Practicality and performance
- Ecological impact and social responsibility
Shortlisted applicants will be required to be available for an interview with the judging committee in July 2009.
The judges' decision is final; no correspondence will be entered into regarding the judges' decision.
THE PANEL OF JUDGES
BRANDON GIEN
Brandon Gien is the Executive Director of the Australian International Design Awards. He is also the General Manager, Corporate Services for Standards Australia, recognised by the Government as Australia's peak Standards body. With a background in management and industrial design, he has been responsible for restructuring the Design Awards program over the last decade. The program is now recognised and highly valued by Australian business, industry, academia, media and the general public for its key role in promoting the value of design and for fostering a broad based culture of creativity and innovation in Australia. Gien is currently undertaking a Doctoral Thesis in Environmental Design at the University of Canberra.
MARITA LEUVER
Marita Leuver is a graphic designer with over 25 years’ experience. Leuver's style reflects her passion for the visual and performing arts, architecture and design. She has worked with many of Australia's leading cultural organisations, including Sydney Opera House, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Melbourne Art Fair, Sydney Film Festival, Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery, Burley Katon Halliday (BKH), Australia Council for the Arts, Sydney Dance Company, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Powerhouse Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney. Since the 1980s, Leuver has won many design, art direction and typography awards; sat on numerous design, typography and illustration judging panels; and represented the design industry on the Committee of the Australian Writers and Art Directors Association AWARD (1991 and 1992). She is former President of START Committee for the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), former Executive Committee member of MCA Young Patrons Capital Appeal, and member MCA Directors Working Circle.
AKIRA ISOGAWA
Akira Isogawa is one of Australia's most celebrated fashion designers. He has achieved international recognition for his exquisite contemporary designs, which are sought after in every major fashion capital throughout the world. Since 1998, Akira has shown his collections in Paris, where he presents Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter collections to international buyers each year, and he continues to maintain a strong presence in Sydney, where he has shown collections at Mercedes Australian Fashion Week every year since 1996. Akira has won multiple awards and has been embraced by the Australian arts sector. He has exhibited at the National Gallery of Victoria, Object Gallery, the Powerhouse Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art, and his work is represented in the Powerhouse Museum collection. He has designed costumes for Sydney Dance Company productions and for the players in the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
MARCUS TRIMBLE
In 2007 Marcus Trimble established Super Colossal (supercolossal.ch), a Sydney-based architecture firm. Trimble is a tutor in design at the University of Sydney Faculty of Architecture. He is actively involved with the Australian Institute of Architects, where he is a member of DARCH - a group of committed architecture geeks that run competitions, public forums and slide nights. With DARCH, Marcus organises the Sydney leg of the global slide night phenomenom, Pecha Kucha. In 2008 he was included in the exhibition Abundant for the Venice Biennale of Architecture. The exhibition was recently shown at Object Gallery in Sydney and is now travelling to galleries around Australia. In 2009 Trimble was named one of Sydney's Creative Catalysts – a collection of 100 of the city's top creative pioneers - as part of the Creative Sydney festival.
HOW TO ENTER
To enter you will need to register using the form below to create a personal login. You will receive an email containing your password and a link to the page where you can log in, submit your profile and upload your entry.
Your profile consists of a summary of your qualifications and professional record, as well as an outline of the program of professional development to be undertaken if the application is successful. This outline is limited to 500 words. Judges will be reviewing multiple entries so keep your description as concise as possible.
Your entry consists of documentation of up to three designs. Each design work may have up to eight images, one video and one sound file. Images should be pdf or jpg format at resolution 72 dpi, with no dimension larger than 800 pixels. Image files must be no greater than 1 MB each. Videos must have maximum dimensions 480 x 320 pixels and a file size no greater than 10 MB. Sound files must be mp3 format with a file size no greater than 10 MB. All uploaded files should be named to include the artist's surname and title of the work.
All applications are to be written in English.
