Always wanted to design your own typeface but don’t know where to start? Here are a few courses, workshops and camps in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.
Type design course:
This course will introduce you to the techniques of type design from drawing through to digital.
Over two weekends: Saturday 6th, Sunday 7th, Saturday 13th, Sunday 14th April 2013 – 10am-2.30pm, each day (total 18 hours tuition)
Location: Hosted by Equation Corporate Design,113 Union Street, McMahons Point
Cost: $700.00 plus GST
There are two components to this course: Design and Construction.The first weekend covers Design, which features sketching techniques, legibility theory and efficient vectoring. The second weekend covers Construction techniques for digital typefaces including spacing, metrics, kerning and introduces you to FontLab font-creation software. Participants will require their own laptop computer with Adobe Illustrator and FontLab.
Participants will leave with the skills to create a working digital typeface of their own. And, this course answers the big question once and for all: which letters do you start with?
Tutor: Wayne Thompson is Type Designer and principal of Australian Type Foundry and has over 100 typefaces to his credit. He is also an experienced teacher, currently delivering Typography classes in Newcastle NSW.

Type by hand workshops:
This workshop will take you on a journey through the world of hand-lettering. With an emphasis on doing rather than watching, you will start with some theory of humanist construction in type, followed by inspiring examples and discussion. You will then be plunged into a series of drawing exercises designed to improve your understanding of character anatomy and interaction. Participants will leave with new drawing techniques and a renewed enthusiasm for hand-lettering, and typography in general. These workshops are aimed at design professionals who want to know more about hand-lettering and type anatomy as an aid to their work. No computers necessary – this workshop is entirely pen-on-paper. Paper supplied, please bring some broad-nibbed felt-tip markers, Artlines, Sharpies or whatever you like to draw with.

Expand your typographic knowledge and understand typesetting specifics, both old and new whilst experimenting with typographic drawing.This high-quality international tutorial camp is for people serious about typography. Four days of typographic immersion!
Type Camp Australia is an educational and professional training event that will strengthen your typography. We dedicate five full days in the seaside resort of Queenscliff, near Melbourne, to discussions, projects, visits, talks, and workshops, which are all focused on helping you to rediscover creativity in typography.
Experienced instructors will share their professional processes and typographic knowledge with you to help you to become a better typographer and a better designer. Each day features seven hours of practical seminars and hands-on workshops that cover letter form structure, letter anatomy, typeface selection, visual context and cues, typesetting techniques, and more.
The instructors will assist you with your current projects, analyze your past projects, and help you plan for your future projects, all within the widening realm of typography and design.
This is a camp primarily for Australian residents (there will be no cultural immersion at this camp), although registration is not limited to Australian residents.
