Robert Baines talks about his works in trans/ACTION, his current art practice and his long artistic career.
Baines has been pushing traditional concepts of jewellery and object-making for more than 30 years, and has profoundly shaped international historical scholarship.
Robert Baines’ award-winning work Transaction is situated outside the entrance to the Civic Centre, and the trans/ACTION exhibition gives some context and meaning to his outdoor work.
He was selected as a ‘Living Treasure’ in 2010 by Object: Australian Centre for Craft and Design, recognising his achievements in jewellery.
His work is often described as questioning truths and understanding traditions, as well as exploring colour and all its emotions – in particular the colour red and how it is understood when it is replicated. He is represented in prestigious international public collections and has won numerous major international and national prizes.
