Statement of significance
This ensemble is a signature work by the internationally-renowned Hong Kong-based fashion designer Pacino Wan (born 1964). It comprises a plastic-coated calico dress with a photographic print of Queen Elizabeth II on the front and Princess Margaret on the back and accessories including a headscarf mirroring that worn by the Queen on the dress, an umbrella, a handbag designed by Pacino Wan for Immi Paris and Union Jack design loafers. The ensemble is from Wan's Spring-Summer 1996-97 collection 'Say goodbye to the Queen' which, like that of many other Hong Kong and mainland Chinese designers, was inspired by the transition of Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty. The piece is typical of Wan's work which is known for its strong conceptual basis and quirky sense of humour. The designer graduated from Hong Kong Polytechnic University Swire School of Design in 1987. After working for a number of local garment manufacturers and exporters he established his own company, She & He Ltd, in 1992. Wan focuses on casual wear, executive wear for young women and accessories. His labels include Pacino Wan, Pacino La Grande Adventure Du Jeans and Idees Et Silky. Wan is also a manufacturer and project designer for a number of European companies including the accessory label Immi Paris and his market extends from Hong Kong to Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Germany, Italy, France and Australia.Description
