'Oakbank' jug, earthenware, Maylands Pottery, South Australia, Australia, 1898-1901

Jug, cream earthenware, press-moulded, of tapering form with a circular footrim and swollen lower body which tapers with near straight sides as it rises to the upward flaring pourer, a rustic wood textured d-shaped handle is set upper body to lower body, the exterior features a relief-moulded design commemorating the annual races at the Oakbank race-course in the Adelaide hills, the design is repeated on both sides of the jug on a wood textured ground with branches of oak leaves with acorn clusters trailing across the upper body and two small horses with determined jockeys galloping towards the finishing line which is manned by two judges in a small booth, the jug is lead glazed with an uneven mixed brown majolica glaze streaked with dark blue.
