Textile length, painted cotton, Gujarat, India, 1700-1800Painted cotton textile length with a design of three flowers in a central circular border surronded by a rectangle with floral design, enclosed by a further border also with floral design, in two shades of green, deep red, yellow and blue on a white ground with black outlines. Gujarat, India. 18th century.(OF).
Production notes
Loosely woven cotton ground; two panels joined at the selvages; surface painting depicting flowers, trees and dense foliage in predominant deep red, outlines drawn in black; blue, yellow and green added. Square format, centrefield framed by border 32 cm wide; central circular floral pattern.History notes
This textile was collected in Tanah Toraja and was probably used by the Toraja people as a mawa, or ceremonial textile.Origin uncertain, but textile looks similar to a palampore illustrated in Irwin (1971, plate 21), from Madras state.
