Sampler, canvas embroidered in Berlin Woolwork technique, F M A Eastaway, [Australia], c.1870.

Cross stitched sampler surrounded by embroidered green border, comprises an upper and lower case alphabet at the top, interspersed with bands of design, followed by a scene of 'Little Bo Peep' surrounded by floral motifs.

The Berlin work sampler is worked in a multicoloured wool on a cream cotton canvas of plain weave. The canvas has one side with selvedge down the right side and the others with turned and hemmed finish.

This sampler was made by Flora M A Eastway, probably in Australia.

This sampler was made c.1870.
History notes
The sampler was made by Flora M.A. Eastway who was related to the firm of Eastway Brothers, fishing tackle suppliers of 330 George Street, Sydney. Flora died about 1924 and was connected to Mrs Williamson's grandfather, Thomas Stokes who arrived in Australia as a small boy about 1856 and for a time lived at 17a Hargrave St, East Sydney. Thomas Stokes had married a Miss Eastway.
