Metalab is thrilled to announce cutting edge Melbourne jeweller, Christopher Earl Milbourne as the winner of this year’s National Contemporary Jewellery Award! This award has been judged biennially at the Griffith Regional Art Gallery since 1988 and gives praise to some of Australia’s leading contemporary jewellers.

Milbourne’s extraordinary piece Megasilo with Overbearing Management Quarters stole the show last Friday night at Griffith Regional Art Gallery, when it was announced as this year’s winning piece. Embodying Christopher’s signature fusion technique, this brooch with stand has been stripped back from its once complex structure. What remains is a precious remnant of Christopher’s original form. Christopher was awarded the Don Begbie Prize in 2007. He has contributed to Design Now at Object Gallery, Fresh Awards at Craft Victoria and has exhibited in the Netherlands and in Japan.

We are delighted to be exhibiting the finalists shortlisted for the National Contemporary Jewellery Award, alongside Christopher Earl Milbourne. This exhibition will travel from Griffith Regional Art Gallery to Metalab for the month of October, before moving on to Sturt Australian Contemporary Craft & Design in Mittagong. Featuring over 28 unique pieces, this exhibition is a celebration of the craft of contemporary Australian jewellery. If you love contemporary design – this exhibition is not to be missed.

The National Contemporary Jewellery Award will run at Metalab from the 4th October – 27th of October.
